What I do love with judo is the respect U often see between judokas. You don't need the attributes of big tatoos, gangstaattitude and trashtalk that you get within the MMA scene.

In Judo there are about 5 ways to win. one of them is submission. when there is a throw, takedown, stumble, unfinished throw or some other instance when an Ippon (full point) isn't scored the players can then enter into ne-waza (ground techniques). In modern Judo the allowed submissions are strangulation/chokes and arm-bars. The difficult aspect to finishing submissions in Judo is you have about 5 seconds to transition to your next position until there is a tap out. Stalling is used often.

@@claymayfieldbjjThanks for asking! I got into Shorinji kan jujitsu (based partly off Judo) for a bit around the time of this video. It was very insightful and challenging to learn a very disciplined and structured system, and super empowering to learn to use opponent's momentum against them safely and respectfully. I only got to yellow belt before stopping because of life, but it was a wonderful community of people. I hope to re-learn some of the techniques since then, as muay thai has always been my main focus, but it is very different! If you train, I hope that is going well!

An ippon is scored when a throw is done cleanly, and usually a bit of force to it driving them into the mat. Also the back must touch the mat. If the ippon isn't scored the round continues until a hold is held for 25 seconds, a fighter taps out, the fighters stand up, or the ref stands them up. Hope this helped.

I dunno, imagine someone watching football/soccer for the first time. The point of the game is obvious, to score a goal, but once the announcer starts talking about strikers, centers, sweepers, and off-sides, it gets hard. The main point of judo is pretty clear, but to understand the details of what throws are being used and how they're scored is more challenging. It just so happens that more people play football than judo, so more people know the details.

Its up to the individuals to educate themselves about a particular sport or activity that they themselves are interested in. I, although in honest truth only know the very novice basics of judo, prefer the commentator. Although its hard to understand the jargon its nice to know that you can still be educated about the sport and be able to research later on about it if interested.

You only score an ippon when the opponent is fully thrown on his back, which means both shoulders touch the ground. This often does not happen, somebody might for instance be thrown on his/her side. You still get some points however, but the match continues, and both players can still score points.

I understand the confusion. Once you watch a few competitions it becomes easier to follow. I don't know all the throw names yet, but I know what an Ippon looks like, which is a throw or submission.

Actually, there is a good reason why you see judokas standing up straight nowadays: if you stay ina bent-over posture they penalize you. Up until a few years ago, youd often see both players bent at the waist and holding on making it hard for either player to make any attacks. Bend over and straighten your arms is a normal reaction which you always see in youth tournaments but it doesnt make for offensive judo. personally, I find its a great rule especially at lowel levels where you can 'hide'/

Judo works on different principles than some of the other grappling arts ( iam by no means knocking wrestlers because they have given me some of my biggest challenges) 1. is off -balancing your opponent, the lower stance wouldn't help as much unless were talking no-gi then you switch up game plan, most judoka train on whats called a compass if you dont want to get thrown forward I take you back, if not back to the side and all of these are taught in combination. it just comes down to experience.

You have a point with the attitude and trash talk. The pre-fight drama gets really old. But if you watch, MMA fighters actually show a lot of respect for each other. Rarely is there bad blood between two fighters that doesn't get left inside the cage.

alright but if 2 judoka face each other at a same level of technique, the physically superior one has a clear advantage, due toe the fact that some techniques are harder to do with an uke who's bigger or heavier, which of course doesn't have to determine the fight, but its a obvious disadvantage

I agree, the martial art spirit is alive with judo, but don't misunderstand MMA, the fact is they have to sell fights and 90% of the fighters do not really hate each other, hence seen after the fight when they praise each other, its the hyoe with MMA, because its massive like boxing.

Hey judokas! I had a really simple question I was wondering if you guys could answer. I noticed that some scoring counted as ippons when they successfully did a throw or a trip. But what I was wondering was, when are they allowed to initiate the pins and ground type work? Is it when they don't do the throw correctly or something like that? Sorry if this is a stupid question :PPP I don't have much experience with judo. A quick answer would be greatly appreciated :)
@mariafrandsen422
@mariafrandsen422 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you need an answer anymore, but yes, when a throw is not successfully executed - meaning either a waza-ari score or no score - then the judokas can take the fight into the floor. Some choose not to, some do seek it. When the referee can see that the ground fight is going nowhere, he calls 'mate' and the fights stand all over from standing position.

Otherwise good one you are correct I couldn't find the examples, I care not for learning nor watching judo now. You have become tiresome to Fck with as well, gl representing :D HF GG its been fun.
