A regular stop on the world judo tour, this year the Heydar Aliyev Baku Grand Slam would be staged in one of those new stadiums and after a marvellous opening ceremony the Grand Slam was ready to begin.
With qualification for the Olympic games so critical, the outcome of Baku in terms of ranking points AND preparation could not be overstated and amongst those in action were world champion Nagase and hopeful under 100 kilo Olympian Gviniashvili.
