Happy to see such an in-depth interview touching on mental health, rather than the usual fluff. IMHO Deguchi was robbed of the 2020 Olympic spot by Judo Canada's decision to make it purely based on the 2021 World Champs standings (rather than a head-to-head like with Abe and Maruyama). I suspect there was some politics involved to favour the "homegrown" Klimkait.
@paultalafo3949 Жыл бұрын
I truly support your opinion about biaised selection. Some of the officials commented: "Deguchi as half canadian, was a japanese judo representative whereas Jessika was a pure Canadian judo". Then they did every thing to get it done
@tl82113 ай бұрын
@@paultalafo3949 I'm honestly too biased to even think about it. Deguchi has pretty nice judo, all things considered... plus she's very charismatic, OTOH I just can't watch Klimkait, her judo works so I'm not criticizing that, but it's such a negative tactic.

We all go through challenges with our mentality. I think it’s important to hear others like her and her struggles so when we also go through issues, it can help us through it. Congratulations to her on her gold medal in the 2024 Olympics

I cried watching this. Congratulations Christa, well done. As a Canadian, I'm very proud, thank you for representing Canada for your hard work and dedication. More importantly, your journey on mental health was incredibly touching and in the end, the win wasn't the goal. It was being the best of yourself while going on that path which led to the gold. Amazing story and very touching. Your family and all of Canada is proud of you! Congratulations again

Christa Deguchi has always been one of my favorite judokas, very technical and strong. I really appreciate this interview because it gives a more three-dimensional portrait of her being, not just the competitive aspect. People often forget how highly demanding it is to be an international level athlete and how many difficulties they have to face. Many athletes go through bad mental periods; speaking of judo, for example Eduard Trippel (by the way, check out his KZbin channel, it's very funny) talked about his depression after the Olympic medals in Tokyo, or Alice Bellandi who after the disappointment at the Tokyo Olympics went through a difficult time mentally with problems of bulimia. It almost seems that reaching the dream of an Olympic medal or missing it is the same thing. Now I feel similar things also for Deguchi and her moment of crisis. A beautiful phrase she said was "[Going to the Olympics] is not even a goal, it's a path", I think that not having that path anymore is the worst thing. Anyway, congratulations for that path that ended in Paris with the very deserved gold medal. 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇

Just watched Judo for first time.....BORING....what kind of gold is it for penalties?
@retrotrident40144 ай бұрын
they are at par, and both players are strong the reason why it's so hard to execute a technique. Penalty points are there to ensure both players are active in making attempts, what the South Korean did was a false attack (no power, execution of whole body - complete form of throw) reason she got penalize with Hansoku (disqualification)
Damn. I don't want my daughter to have these mental hang ups.
@tantunimersin48299 ай бұрын
Than you or the coaches had to teach her that she must prepare herself also maybe for a loss sometimes. A person can‘t always win. Doesn’t matter if its sports or another area in life. That is so important to know for mental health.
