I disagree with the commentary that judoka should view kata as an alternative after their competitive days are over. IMO, you should begin learning NnK and KnK as soon as you're able to perform the techniques. Learning the Randori no Kata will help establish a better understanding of the fundamentals of judo. I wish I had started learning them when I was still a -kyu grade.

Totally agree. Kata is a tool for improving your judo. Kata competition is a relatively recent adjunct to judo.

They didn't say you shouldn't start practicing kata's after your competitive career, they said that after a competitive career is over, why not switch to kata competitions? They even said, that competitive judoka know their kata's but just obviously they focused on the competitions... Kata's are beautiful and can teach you better judo, but if you are training for the world championship they don't offer any benefit, except maybe as an interesting warm-up before training. The people competing at the World Championships already know the techniques they want to employ and how to use them in which situation, kata's don't help them perform those techniques better. They are great for anyone not focused on competitive judo...

Kata is so great ! I came here to watch this because I have some kata training tonight and I wanted to have some points of reference / refresh my memory. I don't practice it enough, but it's just because I need a pal to do it with me ! I love kata.

They are very well practiced, but... It appears that Uke may have overlooked adjusting his lapel grip during the second step of the kataguruma technique on both occasions. (Uke did adjust his grip at the last moment on the right-side and left-side attempts, but once again adjusted the grip during the third step.) I believe others may have noticed this as well.

According to Wolfgang Dax Romswinkel and Ulla Loosen uke is supposed to wait until the third step to adjust the grip, they told me that a few weeks ago at the Nordic Kata judo Open. I don’t know what is competition correct just what I gathered from much more experienced judoka then myself.

Sort of keeping the art and tradition side of judo alive. You could maybe view it as the dance of judo. Both parties know have their own role in the performance and they try to keep the pace of the performance steady and have elegancy to the demonstration of techniques, and of course the control. There's also more categories which include newaza and general self-defense against attackers who attack with kicks and punches and weapons.

Kata is so boring. I was losing interest in judo due to kata: the straw that broke the camel's back was that there was a misunderstanding with the grading timing (I was 'late') and wasn't allowed to grade the week after. I left ju jitsu due to the same reason: the only 'good' thing about ju jitsu was you learn which attack is better countered with a judo throw and which is better countered with an aikido lock. I enjoy MMA more
@KeoniLima
@KeoniLima 8 ай бұрын
Any judoka who thinks that kata is “boring,” has either not been taught its immense value and purpose or didn’t take the time to truly understand the core fundamentals of judo. The mental toughness, focus, and technical aptitude required for judo kata runs circles around randori or shiai. This is why Kano Sensei made it clear that judo was both equally comprised of randori and kata, with neither being more important than the other. As far as your time in grade and competency goes in relation to your next “level” or grade, I think it’s obvious you weren’t quite ready. This is a marathon not a sprint. Slow down, be patient, be present, and realize you are looking through a very small lense. Anyone with a decent strike can ground and pound.
@ronki23
@ronki23 8 ай бұрын
@@KeoniLima it's not easy to ground and pound: you must be in a position where they can't grapple you or strike back. Sometimes ground and pound can be reversed with a sweep. Regarding my grading, our association requires: 5th kyu : Katame no kata 4th kyu: Nage no kata 3rd kyu: Kime no Kata 2nd Kyu: Go no sen kata for boys, Ju no sen kata for girls 1st Kyu: Ju no sen kata for boys, Go no sen kata for girls Black Belt: Goshin ho kata I wasn't allowed to grade the week after the misunderstanding despite a timeslot being available. I learned kata me no kata for my 5kyu and only did it because someone else achieved 5kyu without having to learn it. Actually I found out this guy achieved his 1st Dan the year he was 5 kyu which makes no sense as there are only 2 gradings a year: It's not possible for him to get 1 Dan if there are only 2 gradings a year; he could only have got to 3Kyu that year. This other guy got 1st Dan without doing kata and by doing multiple gradings : unfair. So I quit.
