Judo is awesome for self-defense. Original judo incorporates throwing, takes downs, ground fighting and striking.

Every arts can be effective if you train hard, and smart. There isn't really a better martial art, but lets just say Judo is a very well-rounded art.

Yes, combined with punches judo is very effective. Its origins are in jiu jitsu, so if you want to you can improve your self defence very well.

Yes my friend, very good for self-defense. Some places may even teach you how it disarm someone. But I'm warning you, it is one extremely tough martial art so be prepared. Practice makes perfect just like anything else!

better than a lot of different arts. what are you looking to defend yourself from?
@AetheriusLamia
@AetheriusLamia 12 жыл бұрын
Often people who train in judo also train in other arts, e.g. Korean Tae Kwon Do & Judo schools. It is possible to block a strike from the arm or leg, grab it at the same time, and go down to the ground.

Slight advantage??landing on your head/back outside on the pavement you would call a slight damage?. I ve done japanese jitsu and judo. To learn to defend by jitsu effectively- at least 10 years of training (to many assumptions in this martial art). Defend by Judo- you can learn tons of usefull realistic stuff within weeks! your call

No you still can attack the legs so long as you don't go directly for them, so you take the legs from a combination or a counter

@DetectiveDaggerz I wouldn't even say less skilled they're just different ground games for different purposes. bjj = slow paced, methodical, elaborate/flashy positions, more time to stall, submissions take time etc Judo =explosive, fast paced, less elaborate/flashy less time to stall,submissions come on quick.
@ZailApollo
@ZailApollo 13 жыл бұрын
the Ne Waza of Judoka is generally less skilled than a strict BJJ guy, but thats not taking anything away from the Judo guys, its just what is expected when one person focuses entirely on one style but Judo is essentially 1 and a half styles as it covers some bjj-like fighting. peace brother

Punches and kicks are not allowed in a judo competition but if you train in judo more seriously, as the martial art that it is and not only as a sport, you will be able to practice all the things you need for self defense ;) And we judokas don't need to go to the ground to break an arm or strangle...

I know that punches and kicks are not allowed in Judo , but can anyone say if these people that train in this can handle a punch or kick in a street fight , because if they don't train for strikes , I can't see what good you are in a fight unless you get it to the ground right away .

Definitely not. Judo is more a sport than a form of combat. There are too many rules for it to be practical as a form of self defense. If that's what you want, look into Brazillian Jiu Jutsu, a cousin of Judo. It's much more practical.
