The greatest of all times in my opinion. I started judo 57 years ago. I never saw a champion like him before. I'm French. Teddy Riner never impressed me as ONO. Currently, Japan team as an incredible talent pool.

I started Judo in Japan in 1968 and still learning. Shohei is one of the best but Shozo Fujii is the best ever IMO since he won the open weight category at the Asian Championships. Fujii weighed -80kg and he threw the Heavyweight Sumio Endo for Ippon!
@skopox4 жыл бұрын
@@waikikisurflesson528 That's true. I forgot him. May be because I never saw him fighting. This was before digital cameras. At the earlier 70's, we had a great champion in France (Jean Paul Coche, also weighted under 80 kg who majestically won by ippon the all categories French shampionship in all categories face to Jean-Luc Rougé who became, some months after, our first world champion in the under 93 kg catégorie). Jean-Paul Coche during his career, has always been stopped by Fujii. Thank you for reminding me.

So sad that Judo seems not so popular in Japan like in Europe, based on Ono's comments.

Thanks for this awesome series, and thanks for the interview. A little recommendation; the translation can be better during the interview, since questions and answers did not always felt like they address each other.

Ramiz Arslan maybe he dodged the questions? For the “who do you look up to” question, for example, I’m guessing he meant he doesn’t look up to anyone?
