Yes but Bjj ground work is lightyears ahead of judo’s. We don’t really even use the judo groundwork moves anymore

30 years ago Groundwork was much revered and Judoka who practiced for 20 years were unstoppable on the floor. Nowadays the focus is certainly on stand up and I can still beat blackbelts on the floor after 20 years off the sport, I went back aged 50.

It'd be nice if there was a no-gi grappling sport that incorporated them all. BJJ does sort of, but it doesn't reward many points for forceful throws like judo & those throws aren't encouraged + pulling guard is kinda lame.

I did judo in the 90s and i will say this my top game translates well in bjj my base and core is strong so i can avoid sweeps and understand submissions. People would see me with a white belt wondering how i am grappling purple belts and brown belts with ease

Idk the Judo term, but in BJJ terms we'd call it the Reverse Omaplata. It's very rare. Imo, it's one of the best moves across both sports. In Judo, it's actually technically a better move because it doubles as a turn-over and potentially a pin even if you don't get the submission. Whereas, in BJJ I don't think it'd award you any points, so it's a hail mary to submission. . . but it'd probably leave you in a good position. I know some Judoka will call it the Huizinger Roll, but I think of that as a transition. I'm talking about the Japanese/Kodokan way of saying the submission like Ude Garame. . . Lastly, I think most Judoka are surprised by this move as well, even many blackbelts don't know this.

Just trained at an Olympic level judo academy who also has BJJ classes and still there judo blackbelts we’re absolute trash on the newaza. It felt like they were the most experienced white belts but had no real defense. There tachi waza was incredible but even there white belts felt somewhat strong there but disappointing on the ground. I hope to see a world where we can combine the 3 major grappling arts into one!

Judo is the takedown. BJJ is the groundwork. I see them as completely complimentary, and competitions should incorporate both. Instead, we just have pulling guard in BJJ which is just uninteresting to watch

As someone has already stated, white's shoulder has dislocated when they hit the mat together, because the mass of two bodies falling transferred itself into white's shoulder joint. And he still didn't tap until he was rolled and the bar was on.

Hand behind the shoulder -> torques the shoulder. Hand away from the shoulder as here -> torques the elbow before the shoulder.

Only It IS still effective if its not right, only It transfers the pressure. And there IS an allowed grey area for shoulder cranks, as long as they are not evidently a shoulder exclusive attack

Ive always said this though. Judo is mostly takedowns with a little ground work and BJJ is mostly ground work with a little takedowns. Wrestling is a good mix of both

Judo has more groundwork than freestyle wrestling. Wrestling has no submissions while most of bjj’s most common submissions come from judo

BUT Judo had much better groundwork 15 years ago. With double leg takedown and newaza it has been a more complete grappling sport than BJJ today. Its sad. If BJJ would change the rules and make throws and standup wrestling more important it could be what Judo has been in the past. I think they are on a good way with combat jiujitsu.

I never learned that in Judo. The dojos I’ve trained at emphasized throwing techniques. We did some newaza, but were pretty basic. I’ve done omoplatas in BJJ, but never a reverse and definitely not from standing. I watched that thing like 50 times. Very impressive technique and execution.
